TUTORIALS: ARM PROCESSOR VERSIONS

ARM Architecture has undergone a number of changes while moving from one version to another version.


ARM VERSION 1 (1983-1985)


  • First ARM processor version to be commercialized.
  • It had 26 Bit Addressing capabilities.
  • No support for multiplication. No additional Co-Processor support

ARM VERSION 2

  • Included 32 bit result multiply Co-Processor
ARM VERSION 3

  • Enhanced to 32 bit Addressing capabilities
ARM VERSION 4

  • Added Signed, Unsigned half-word and signed byte load and store instructions

ARM VERSION 4T

  • 16-bit Thumb compressed form of instruction sub-set introduced. Hence increase in code density as same amount of memory can now be used to store more instructions
ARM VERSION 5T

  • Superset of 4T. Added additional ARM/Thumb instructions

ARM VERSION 5TE

  • Added Signal Processing signal extensions/instructions.
